About the event

Have you ever thought about changing careers but didn't know where to begin? In this month's Between Three Gals, we'll sit with Jacky Shu (Rogue Planet) and Bridgette Wright (Wild Card) who did just that. They'll give us insight into pivoting to a new career and share the steps they took to get to where they are now. Get ready with your questions for these powerhouse Soapbox members who are all too happy to share their experiences and help anyone looking to make a change.

JACKY SHU

I come from a really small town in Jersey, where my big mouth and rough attitude got me in trouble constantly. I never had a thought to what I was going to do as a profession, and I don’t really remember having any “dreams” of doing, well, anything. It wasn’t until I went to college that I discovered that theatrical marketing was even a profession, and it excited me. Back then they really didn’t have a lot of options, so I studied “online video editing.” When I moved out to LA I just took the first job that was offered to me and the next and the next. I never learned about how to negotiate or to look for the job that I wanted, but I got lucky. In a few years I was an account exe at a print company, and for a few years it was really satisfying. By then I had been there a good number of years and it was getting a little dull, and toxic, and I needed to get out. The AV life was calling to me and I took my shot. The last few years I had worked my ass off to make sure I got connections, and not just work connections, but real life friendships, and I used those those to start again, in the AV world. I was thankful for every opportunity, and every chance that was given to me, but it took a very long time to realize that those things were not given to me, that I had worked hard in this industry to make those things happen. From the amazing things that I had learned in print and AV, I along with my husband, who was a creative director at the time, decided to head our own AV company in 2015, the very year I had my first kid. I have been very lucky in this business and I definitely don’t take that for granted. And that is why I try and give back to our community, every chance I get.
